BACKGROUND & CHALLENGE
You don’t become a leader in the emerging Virtual Reality (VR) market without being aggressive, but sometimes that drive has unintended consequences. One of the top VR providers found that its aggressive goals had left it talent constrained as it neared the ship date for its new product. The company’s internal team didn’t have the bandwidth to focus on the crucial areas of functionality, security and usability, but the company was hesitant to engage a traditional staffing firm only a few months from shipping. In the past, the overhead associated with starting up an engagement was high and the company worried that bringing on a new team could increase the burden on the already overtaxed full-time personnel.
The VR company’s initial reservations were put to rest when it engaged Q Analysts. It’s a decision the company has not regretted, as it resulted in a high-quality product delivered on time and has grown into a valued partnership that now spans all the company’s lines of business.
Q Analysts moved quickly, staffing an expert team in less than two weeks from project inception. Employing its consultative engagement approach, Q Analysts was able to technically engage with the client and determine a project plan that was both prescriptive and reactive to the agile state of a complex first-time-to-market product. Q Analysts’ expertise in executing in agile environments kept the team focused on the most important tasks of the week, the day and sometimes even the hour.
While the initial focus of the team was on usability, setup, configuration testing and security, the Q Analysts experts quickly identified adjacent test areas that needed attention. The practice-driven approach that allowed Q Analysts to find and address these additional areas for testing is one of the major differentiators of the company. Q Analysts prides itself on being so thoroughly engaged and immersed in the environment and SDLC that the right questions are asked, opportunities are uncovered and priorities are challenged. By making the test coverage more opportunistic, Q Analysts routinely exceeds client expectations and, ultimately, helps create a better end-user experience.
Due to the Client’s aggressive schedule, there had been no time for ongoing updates to test scripts, procedures and toolsets. This raised serious concerns prior to the engagement: would the new team be able to come in late in the SDLC and get up to speed and be effective with a backdrop of out-of-date information? This is another area where Q Analysts outshines the competition. The Q Analysts team was able to come in and, using a low impact approach, extract just enough of the “tribal knowledge” needed to find bugs and update the test plans simultaneously – a key value add appreciated by the client.
The result of the engagement was the successful, on-time delivery of a high-quality product. But, it didn’t stop there, in fact it was just the beginning of Q Analysts role at this VR provider. Q Analysts has quadrupled the size of the team that works with this VR client. It is now providing resources across all lines of the VR company’s business in the areas of SDK, Hardware, Mobile and E-commerce, with emphasis in both Black and White Box testing. The Q Analysts team has also made a significant impact in automating these areas with a sophisticated custom built test framework that continues to be developed.
